Divorce Took More Than Your Marriage: John Spencer Ellis on the Physical Toll and the Way Back
Nobody hands a man a list of what to expect physically when a marriage ends.
So he does not connect the dots. The waistband that got tighter. The 3 a.m. wake-ups. The nightcap that became three drinks. The temper he does not recognize. The workouts that stopped without a decision ever being made.
He files it all under "I am not coping well."
The more accurate reading: he is experiencing a hormonal and behavioral cascade that follows a documented sequence — and reverses in a documented order.
A stress response with nowhere to land
Cortisol evolved for threats that conclude. Danger arrives, cortisol surges, danger passes, the system stands down.
Divorce offers no conclusion. Eighteen to twenty-four months of legal process, financial untangling, custody logistics and rebuilding a sense of self. The stand-down signal never comes.
What sustained cortisol produces:
- Fat redistributing toward the abdomen
- Testosterone output falling
- Blood pressure climbing
- Glucose handling deteriorating
- Sleep architecture breaking down
That last one seals the loop. Fractured sleep raises cortisol; raised cortisol fractures sleep.
Testosterone hit from three directions
Overnight production lost. Most testosterone synthesis happens during sleep. Five broken hours means reduced output nightly, every night.
Cortisol suppression. The two hormones run inversely. Chronic elevation in one drives the other down.
The aromatase problem. Visceral fat is not inert. It contains aromatase, an enzyme that converts testosterone into estrogen. Gaining belly fat does not merely accompany low testosterone — it produces it.
Follow the circuit: stress raises cortisol → cortisol builds visceral fat → visceral fat burns through testosterone → low testosterone strips the drive needed to break out.
What you cannot feel is what matters most
Blood pressure rises from sympathetic drive. Alcohol pushes it higher. Extra weight pushes it higher still. Lipid panels drift. Fasting glucose ticks up. Inflammatory markers such as hs-CRP climb.
Not one of these hurts.
A man can log two years of real cardiovascular deterioration while feeling entirely ordinary. Which is why bloodwork matters more in this window than almost any other — and why almost nobody books it.
The population data is consistent. Analysis pooling 7,881,040 individuals found divorced and separated men carrying elevated all-cause and cardiovascular mortality compared to divorced women. The Japan Collaborative Cohort Study identified the same cardiovascular elevation in divorced men, with no equivalent finding in women.
Why the extra drinks cost more than they appear to
Rising alcohol intake after divorce runs through the literature as a male-typical externalizing response — it escalates quietly, precisely when a man's ability to notice is at its lowest.
The bill comes downstream:
- Shuts down muscle protein synthesis, wasting any training that survived
- Wrecks sleep architecture even while shortening time to fall asleep
- Drives blood pressure up and abdominal fat with it
- Sharpens next-day anxiety, which strengthens the case for drinking again
- Suppresses testosterone directly
Four nights of drinking is not four separate nights. It is a continuous physiological condition that sets a ceiling on everything else you attempt.
Depression that does not announce itself
Male distress after divorce rarely matches the textbook. It emerges as:
- Irritability, a fuse noticeably shorter than before
- Compulsive work — long weeks, constant motion, no stillness
- Risk-taking that surprises people who know him
- Numbness standing in for grief
- Quiet withdrawal from friends and family
Clinicians name this masked depression, and it produces a genuine hazard: the men in the deepest trouble frequently present as the ones handling it best. A man burying himself in seventy-hour weeks and reporting that he is fine is displaying symptoms, not strength.
Confidence comes apart in three separate places
Physical confidence — visible in the mirror every morning.
Relational confidence — the wound everyone expects.
Identity confidence — the one nobody warns about. Two decades of a defined role ends, and the question of who you are now arrives without an answer.
Appearance ties all three together. Men commonly report looking a decade older inside eighteen months, and that perception fuels further withdrawal — cutting off the connection that would help most. Holt-Lunstad's meta-analysis of 148 studies covering 308,849 participants found strong social relationships associated with a 50% higher likelihood of survival.
Two programs, two different constraints
Health, Longevity and Aesthetic Optimization for Men 40+
Built for the physiology. 90 days, fully personalized:
Comprehensive intake — health status, training and injury history, sleep, stress load, alcohol intake, current medications. This identifies which drivers are genuinely active for you, rather than assuming the textbook order.
Bloodwork guidance alongside your physician — blood pressure, full lipid panel, fasting glucose and HbA1c, hs-CRP, thyroid function, morning testosterone. Numbers replace assumptions.
A protocol spanning training, nutrition, sleep architecture and stress physiology, deliberately sequenced so sleep and alcohol stabilize before training volume rises. That order is the reason results hold past week three instead of collapsing.
Twelve weekly one-on-one sessions. Consistency predicts outcomes; weekly contact produces consistency. For many men after divorce it is also the first genuinely honest conversation in a long time.
Explicit work on body composition and appearance — because visible progress is what keeps a man engaged long enough for the invisible markers to move. Restoring physical confidence here is not vanity. It is load-bearing.

Escape the Rat Race Coaching
Divorce comes with financial pressure, and the instinct is to work more. Understandable — and it eliminates the exact hours every step above requires. The plan collapses again and again, and the man concludes he lacks discipline.
He does not. The shape of the work is the problem.
The Escape the Rat Race Coaching Program takes decades of accumulated expertise and rebuilds it into a simpler, more profitable, location-flexible income model — fewer moving parts, lower overhead, no employees, actual authority over your own calendar.
Occupational health research consistently identifies high demand paired with low control as the harmful combination, not effort by itself. This program goes after control — which is what makes a protected training slot, a real bedtime and a rebuilt social life possible.
John ran this play himself. Thirty-three years as founder and CEO of four organizations, then a deliberate sale of the draining businesses, properties and possessions that added complexity without value, rebuilding around a simple business with no employees and complete location independence.
Most men run them in order
Health first, so the larger structural decisions get made by a man who is sleeping and thinking clearly. Then the work restructure, so the recovery is not undone by the same schedule that caused it.
Where to begin
Book the bloodwork this week. Blood pressure, lipids, fasting glucose and HbA1c, thyroid, morning testosterone, hs-CRP.
Then answer one question honestly: is what is stopping you your body, or your calendar?
